Uses
Clomiphene, a non-steroidal fertility medication, stimulates the pituitary gland to release hormones crucial for inducing ovulation.
It’s prescribed to prompt ovulation in women with specific medical conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome that hinder natural ovulation.
Clomifene, a nonsteroidal SERM, blocks estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus, preventing estrogen’s negative feedback on gonadotropin release and boosting the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis.
Zuclomifene, a more potent isomer, maintains longer binding periods.
In a typical female hormonal cycle, high estrogen and progesterone from the corpus luteum inhibit GnRH, FSH, and LH around 7 days post-ovulation. Without fertilization, the corpus luteum breaks down due to insufficient beta-hCG, normally produced by the embryo to sustain progesterone and estrogen levels for pregnancy maintenance.
